JavaScripts E4X

I was pleased pink to see Jon Udells recent remarks about E4X. E4X is the BEA inspired extension to JavaScript that has been proposed and adopted but only as an extension to JavaScript. As Jon implies E4X really does simplify XML processing in JavaScript. See the full spec here and decide for yourself. Unfortuately, like the mess of ANSI SQL, now too the JavaScript vendors have the option of fragmenting the JavaScript standard because implementing E4X is optional. When doing a story on JavaScript and E4X earlier this year the best I could get from major vendors such as Adobe, Macromedia, Microsoft and others was “we are considering it”. In French the expression is “Cest dommage” – too bad, its a pity.
